Bucura Lake, Glacier lake in Retezat Mountains, Romania
Bucura Lake lies at 2,040 meters elevation in the Retezat Mountains and covers approximately 105,000 square meters with a length of 550 meters and width of 225 meters. It formed through glacial processes that carved a deep basin holding roughly 625,000 cubic meters of water today.
The lake formed during the ice age through glacial erosion in the Retezat Mountains, creating its characteristic alpine landscape. This natural origin made the area significant for local communities from early settlement times onward.
The lake has been a gathering place for the local community for centuries, particularly during the traditional Nedeia festival held in leap years, marked by dancing around its shores. The way people use and celebrate this place reflects a deep connection between the highland community and this mountain waters.
The lake is reached via a 14-kilometer forest road starting from kilometer 61 on the Hațeg-Caransebeș route, passing by Fetele Voilesei waterfall along the way. The mountain journey requires good preparation and endurance, especially given the elevation and changing weather conditions.
The lake is fed by five natural springs flowing from the surrounding mountain landscape and drains through a single outlet releasing approximately 250 liters per second toward Lake Lia. This water system shows how it connects within the broader alpine hydrology of the region.
