Catherine's Gate, Medieval city gate in Brașov, Romania.
Catherine's Gate is a medieval city gate in Brașov featuring four corner turrets and the city coat of arms displaying a crown above an oak tree. The central tower houses a museum section and stands at the intersection of Șchei and Brașov streets.
The gate was built in 1559 by the Tailors' Guild to replace an earlier structure destroyed by floods in 1526. This rebuilding marks the importance of guild authority in shaping the city's medieval defenses and appearance.
The gate historically controlled access for Romanian merchants from the Șchei district, who entered during the period of Saxon rule to trade their goods. This passage reflects how the city managed commerce and maintained separate communities within its walls.
The gate is easily reached on foot from the old town and offers views from the central tower across the surrounding area. Approach from the city center and head toward the eastern city walls to find it.
The four small turrets at each corner symbolize judicial rights and reflect the independence the city held in governing its own affairs. This was a rare privilege in the medieval order of the kingdom.
