Sphinx, Rock formation in Bucegi Mountains, Romania.
The Sphinx stands at 2,216 meters altitude as a natural rock formation carved by thousands of years of wind erosion and weathering processes in Romania's Bucegi Mountains.
First photographed around 1900, this geological formation received its nickname in 1936 due to its resemblance to the Great Sphinx of Giza in Egypt.
The Sphinx appeared in Romanian films including 'The Dacians' in 1967 as a sacrificial site to the god Zalmoxis and 'Burebista' in 1980 symbolizing enduring Romanian identity.
Visitors can reach the formation via hiking trails from Sinaia or Busteni towns, or by cable car when weather conditions permit safe operation during favorable seasons.
Measuring approximately 8 meters high and 12 meters wide, the formation's distinctive human-like facial features become especially pronounced when illuminated by sunset on November 21st.
