Cantacuzino Castle, Art museum and castle in Bușteni, Romania
Cantacuzino Castle is an art museum and castle in Bușteni built on a rectangular base with an open southern side, set within a large park in the Carpathian Mountains. Its interior rooms feature lavishly decorated details in Carrara marble, carved wood, and ornate wrought iron work.
Prince Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino had this castle built in 1911 by architect Grigore Cerchez in Neo-Romanian style as a summer home. The building was later restored and now operates as a public museum.
The castle displays twelve life-size portraits of the Cantacuzino family on Cordoba leather, while Murano glass windows and Italian ceramics decorate its rooms.
The location is accessible on foot, with sturdy walking shoes recommended for exploring the mountain park setting. The interior is best explored unhurriedly to appreciate the details throughout each room.
A ballroom inside holds an extensive collection of heraldic fabrics that trace the Cantacuzino family lineage back to Byzantine emperors. These textiles tell the story of one of Europe's oldest aristocratic lines.
