Peștera Muierilor, Show cave in Baia de Fier, Romania
Peștera Muierilor is a show cave in Baia de Fier, Gorj County, within the Parâng Mountains that stretches over 7 kilometers and contains four galleries on two levels. The entrance sits at around 700 meters elevation in the Galbenu Valley, surrounded by wooded slopes and karst formations.
Archaeological excavations between 1951 and 1953 uncovered human skull fragments dating back around 30,000 years. Researchers also found remains of cave bears and cave panthers from the same distant past.
The name means "Cave of Women" and recalls times when local inhabitants sought shelter here while their men fought in wars. Today the cave preserves this memory as a quiet refuge in the mountains.
The cave opens all year round, from 9 AM to 7 PM in summer and 9 AM to 5 PM in winter. Visits happen in groups of 4 to 100 people, so it helps to plan ahead or join a group on site.
This cave was the first in Romania to be fitted with electric lighting, and the upper gallery of 550 meters (1,800 feet) was electrified specifically for visitors. The lighting system allows you to see formations even in the depths without needing flashlights.
