Polovragi cave

Polovragi Cave is a show cave in Gorj County that extends through a sequence of underground passages with varying ceiling heights and widths. The interior displays numerous stalactites and stalagmites that form natural sculptures throughout the accessible route.

Humans first inhabited this cave during the Old Stone Age, leaving behind traces of their presence over millennia. Archaeological evidence shows the site was used continuously through later periods until the Bronze Age.

The cave has long held sacred meaning for local populations, with its distinctive throne-shaped formation linking it to ancient worship practices. Visitors can see how this natural feature became central to the beliefs and stories of those who came before.
