Sacalin Island, Ecological reserve in Danube Delta, Romania
Sacalin Island is an ecological reserve in the Danube Delta where merged landmasses have formed through continuous river sedimentation. The terrain consists of low marshlands, shallow channels, and open water areas that shift and change with the river's natural rhythms.
The area first appeared on maps in 1771 during conflicts between Russian and Ottoman forces in the region. It has grown steadily over the past century as the Danube River continues to deposit sediment and create new land.
The island formed through natural sedimentation and is carefully managed today to keep its wild character intact. Visitors encounter a place where people have not settled, allowing nature to thrive on its own terms.
Access is only possible with guided boat tours that depart from nearby villages to protect the delicate habitats. Come prepared with waterproof and warm clothing, as the area is exposed to wet conditions and weather.
The reserve is home to numerous bird species and harbors some of the largest nesting colonies of terns and pelicans in Europe. These bird concentrations make it one of the most important stops for birdwatchers and nature observers in the region.
