Bile, Military settlement on Snake Island, Ukraine
Bile is a small settlement located on Snake Island in the Black Sea near the Danube Delta. The military installation spreads across a compact area and contains housing and facilities for stationed personnel.
Bile was established in 2007 and marked Ukraine's move to strengthen presence in disputed waters. The founding was part of responses to boundary disagreements with Romania in this region.
Military personnel stationed in Bile maintain a monument dedicated to 25 Russian sailors who perished during the 1905 Russo-Japanese War conflict.
The site is not accessible to visitors as it remains under military control with no civilian visits permitted. Information about the island itself is limited and often difficult to obtain.
Water must be brought to the island from outside since there are no natural freshwater sources. Supplying fresh water is therefore a constant logistical challenge for those living there.
