Remetei-sziklaszoros

Remetei-sziklaszoros is a limestone gorge in the Apuseni Mountains with vertical rock walls that rise between 150 and 200 meters above the valley. The formation stretches approximately two kilometers and features some trails that are partially submerged or secured with metal cables along the steep terrain.

Remetei Monastery was established in the 15th century and survived Austrian church demolitions in 1762 because of its remote mountain location. This isolation helped preserve the complex when many other religious buildings in the region were destroyed.

The Orthodox monastery at the gorge entrance serves as a spiritual center where local communities gather for religious observances and traditional practices. Visitors can witness how the monastery continues to shape daily life and beliefs in the surrounding mountain villages.

Bring sturdy footwear and proper hiking gear, especially if rain is expected or has recently fallen, since some sections become slippery and water levels rise. The pathways are narrow in places and require careful attention, so allow time to navigate safely through the terrain.

The narrow section called La Cuptor requires careful movement through rocky terrain and offers encounters with rare mountain plant species found nowhere else in the region. Many visitors overlook this botanical treasure despite its ecological significance.
