Cheile Vălișoarei, Nature reserve in Apuseni Mountains, Romania
Cheile Vălișoarei is a nature reserve with steep limestone cliffs rising dramatically through a narrow valley. The site displays distinct rock layers and is shaped by several prominent mountain peaks.
A medieval fortress called Zedecheu once stood along the right side of the gorge. No visible remains of this structure survive to the present day.
The gorge holds significance in local traditions as a place where stories and beliefs connect to the dramatic rock formations. These meanings remain woven into how people relate to their landscape today.
Access is via the DJ 107M road connecting Aiud and Buru, reachable by car or bus. Hiking trails run through the gorge and allow exploration at your own pace over several hours.
Interpretive panels along the hiking trails offer information about local plants and rock formations at different elevations. These panels help visitors understand the geological and biological story of the place.
