Codrii de Argint, Nature reserve near Varatec, Romania
Codrii de Argint is a protected forest reserve near Varatec that centers on old birch trees with silver-grey bark. The reserve sits at roughly 500 meters elevation along a lower terrace of the Topolita stream.
The forest received official protection status in March 2000 through Law No. 5, establishing it as a recognized nature reserve. This formal designation preserved the distinctive ecosystem for conservation and public access.
Romanian poet Mihai Eminescu referenced this location in his poem Calin, describing the silver forest and copper woods that visitors encounter today. The landscape still carries these literary names as part of local identity.
Visitors can reach the reserve via marked paths from Targu Neamt, roughly 4 kilometers from the nearest public transport stop. Wear proper footwear and stay on the paths, especially when the ground is wet.
The birch trees in the reserve show striking seasonal changes, especially in spring and autumn, with their silver-colored bark appearing different under various light conditions. This quality makes the area a visual experience that shifts noticeably depending on the season and time of day.
