Durău Monastery, Orthodox monastery in Ceahlău, Romania.
Durău Monastery is an Orthodox monastery nestled at the base of the Ceahlău Mountains at about 800 meters elevation. The complex features a church decorated with painted frescoes and a stone bell tower.
The monastery was constructed between 1830 and 1835 on the site of an earlier hermitage dating to the 1600s. The original settlement was founded by a princess, and the current building replaced this older religious community.
The interior paintings show religious scenes with vivid colors and detailed figures created during the 1930s. Visitors can observe how the artwork reflects the spiritual devotion of those who commissioned and created it.
The site is roughly 90 kilometers from the nearest major city and attracts hikers heading to the mountain and nearby waterfalls. The best time to visit is during warmer months when mountain trails are accessible.
The monastery serves as headquarters for two separate hermitages, each maintaining its own active religious community within the broader monastic network. This arrangement of multiple spiritual centers in one location is uncommon.
