Bicaz Canyon, Natural canyon in Carpathian Mountains, Romania.
Bicaz Canyon is a natural gorge in the Carpathian Mountains that cuts through limestone formations and connects the regions of Moldova and Transylvania. The steep rock walls extend for several kilometers and dominate the surrounding landscape with their sheer scale.
The canyon was carved over thousands of years by the Bicaz River, which eroded through the limestone rocks of the Hășmaș Mountains. This natural process gradually shaped the valley into what visitors see today.
The canyon contains several caves like the Black Cave that visitors and researchers still explore today. These underground spaces shape the experience for anyone walking along the rock walls.
The main road DN12C runs through the entire canyon and provides easy access to viewing points and walking paths. Visitors can explore the rock formations from different spots or simply drive through at their own pace.
A section called Gâtul Iadului (Satan's Throat) features tight passages where the road passes beneath overhanging rock formations. This narrow spot is often the most memorable part of the drive through the canyon for visitors.
