Surduc Lake, reservoir located in Timiș County
Surduc Lake is a large reservoir located in the village of Fârdea within Timiș County, Romania. The body of water stretches approximately four kilometers long and three kilometers at its widest point, reaching depths of up to 17 meters and holding over 24 million cubic meters of water.
The dam was constructed between 1972 and 1976, capturing water from the Gladna River. A second expansion phase began in the early 1980s to increase storage capacity and ensure water supply for Timișoara and nearby communities.
The lake serves as a gathering place where locals and visitors spend leisure time with family and friends throughout the year. The shores offer spaces for relaxation and connection with nature, reflecting how water shapes community life in this rural area.
The lake is a short drive from the cities of Timișoara and Lugoj, making it easily accessible for visitors. Open shorelines offer spaces for walking, fishing, and relaxation, with basic facilities available for those who come to spend time there.
The dam is unique in Romania because it is unusually narrow relative to the volume of water it holds. This design allows the lake to remain unfrozen during winter months, providing year-round refuge for waterfowl and other animals.
