White Church, Romanian Orthodox church on Victory Avenue, Bucharest, Romania.
The White Church sits on Calea Victoriei with a single nave, two octagonal domes, and a semicircular altar apse as its main structural elements. The exterior displays Neoclassical architecture featuring Doric pilasters, frieze work, and a serrated cornice that define its appearance.
It was built before 1700 on the Văcărescu family estate and underwent major reconstruction around 1827 following severe earthquake damage in 1802. This rebuilding restored the structure and allowed it to remain a place of worship for centuries.
The interior holds a linden wood iconostasis crafted in Brâncovenesc style, blending craftsmanship with spiritual practice. The wall paintings inside shape how worshippers experience the prayer space and reflect artistic traditions passed down through generations.
The site is easily accessible via Calea Victoriei, one of the main routes through central Bucharest. Keep in mind this is an active place of worship where regular services take place, so visiting hours may vary.
The building holds two dedications: Saint Nicholas and Prophet Elijah, a dual veneration that reflects its long journey through time. This dual patronage hints at how worship practices and community needs shaped the church across different eras.
