Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts

The Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts is a national scientific institution located in central Belgrade. The building combines 19th-century facades with newer extensions that provide additional space for research activities and public events.

Founded in 1841 as the Society of Serbian Letters, the organization received its current status and name after several restructurings during the 20th century. The main building was completed in the 1920s and has served as the home for the academic community ever since.

The institution's name reflects its dual mission to advance both scientific research and artistic expression in the country. Scholars gather here to present their findings and discuss ideas that shape academic life across the region.

The library and exhibition spaces open on weekdays during standard business hours, though some areas remain restricted to academic visitors. Lectures and presentations usually take place in the morning or early afternoon and may be open to the general public on occasion.

Upper floors hold small reading rooms with original documents from the 19th century that open only by prior request. The basement contains a collection of old scientific instruments once used for experiments in physics and chemistry.
