Žrnov

Žrnov is a fortress that once stood on Avala mountain in Serbia, featuring an Upper Town and Lower Town separated by a defensive dry moat. The structure was positioned at a high elevation and occupied significant ground as a military stronghold.

Romans first established an outpost at this location, which Serbs later expanded into a larger fortress. In 1442 the site fell under Ottoman control and became known as Havale.

The site held significance in regional memory and shaped how people understood medieval fortifications in the area. Local stories passed down through generations reflected its role in protecting the community.

The site is not accessible today since the original structure was completely demolished in 1934. The location now forms part of the Monument to the Unknown Hero, which can be viewed from outside.

The ground beneath the site contained deposits of lead and mercury ore, with mining activities tracing back to the Vinča culture around 5700 BC. This ancient mining activity makes the location an important archaeological testament to early resource extraction in the region.
