Žrnov, Medieval fortress on Avala mountain, Serbia

The fortress stood at 511 meters elevation, featuring an Upper Town and Lower Town separated by a deep dry moat across 3,500 square meters.

The Romans established an outpost that Serbs later expanded into a fortress, which fell under Ottoman control in 1442 and was renamed Havale.

Throughout centuries, the fortress influenced regional military architecture and left traces in Serbian oral traditions about medieval defensive structures.

Nothing remains of the original structure since its complete demolition in 1934 to construct the Monument to the Unknown Hero.

The site contained deposits of lead and mercury ore, with mining activities dating back to the Vinča culture around 5700 BC.
