Terazije Theatre, Musical theatre in Terazije Square, Belgrade, Serbia
Terazije Theatre is a musical theatre situated on Terazije Square, one of the most central points in Belgrade, Serbia. The auditorium has seating on the main floor and an upper balcony, giving the hall a traditional two-level layout.
The theatre was founded in 1949, in the years following World War II, when Belgrade was rebuilding its cultural life. It carried different names over the following decades before taking its current name in the 1970s.
The theatre is known for staging musicals in Serbian, which makes it one of the few places in the country where this art form is performed in the local language. It draws a broad mix of audiences, from school groups to long-time theatre-goers who return season after season.
The theatre sits right on Terazije Square in central Belgrade, making it easy to find on foot from most parts of the city centre. Several bus and tram stops are within a short walk, so arriving by public transport is straightforward.
The building was designed by a Russian architect, which was rare for theatre construction in this part of Europe at the time. When the interior was renovated in the early 2000s, the work was done carefully enough that the original character of the hall was kept intact.
