Davidovica Monastery, Serbian Orthodox monastery in Brodarevo, Serbia
Davidovica Monastery is a Serbian Orthodox monastery in Brodarevo, in the municipality of Prijepolje, set on the banks of the Lim River with the Jadovnik mountain in the background. The complex consists of a main church, surrounding monastic buildings, and burial areas both inside and outside the church walls.
The monastery was founded in 1281, when a monk named David signed a contract with builders from Dubrovnik to construct the church as an endowment of the Nemanjic dynasty. Over the following centuries it was repeatedly damaged and rebuilt, which explains why the site today shows layers from different periods.
The monastery is an active place of worship where visitors can attend the Holy Liturgy and observe how religious life continues without interruption. On feast days, the courtyard fills with worshippers from the surrounding region, giving the place a noticeably different energy than on quiet weekdays.
The monastery sits near Brodarevo and is reached by road from Prijepolje, following the Lim River valley for most of the route. The grounds can be uneven in places, so sturdy footwear makes the visit more comfortable, especially around the older sections of the complex.
The 1281 construction contract signed between the monk David and the Dubrovnik craftsmen is one of the oldest surviving written building documents from medieval Serbia. It shows that religious construction at the time was organized like any trade deal, with specific terms for materials and payment written down in detail.
