Golija Nature Park, Nature park in southwestern Serbia
Golija Nature Park is a protected area in southwestern Serbia that spans five municipalities, with Mount Golija as its central feature. The landscape consists of thick forests, flowing rivers, and numerous natural springs scattered throughout the territory.
The Serbian government designated the area as a protected nature park in 2001 and secured its recognition as a UNESCO-MAB Biosphere Reserve that same year. This dual protection established the framework for managing and preserving the environment for future generations.
Around 33 villages dot the territory, where people continue farming practices passed down through generations and celebrate seasonal gatherings like the Days of Queen Helena. Walking through these communities gives a sense of how local traditions shape daily rhythms across the park.
The park has around 400 kilometers of marked cycling paths and multiple hiking trails ranging from 9 to 17 kilometers in length. Planning your visit depends on which routes interest you, as difficulty and duration vary considerably.
At Tičar Lake, situated at about 1436 meters in elevation, water naturally splits and flows in opposite directions. This water divide separates streams that eventually reach the Moravica and Studenica rivers.
