Sopoćani monastery, Medieval Orthodox monastery in Raška region, Serbia

Sopoćani Monastery sits near the source of the Raška River with a central church topped by a prominent dome and lined with extensive fresco decoration inside. The building blends Romanesque forms with local building traditions.

King Stefan Uroš I established the monastery between 1259 and 1270 as his royal foundation and final resting place for his family. This foundation was part of the development of medieval Serbian statehood in the Raška region.

The frescoes draw monks and pilgrims who come to pray before the religious scenes and holy figures depicted on the walls. These artworks shape the spiritual purpose of the space and make it a place of devotion for Orthodox believers.

The monastery sits about half an hour by car from Novi Pazar and is straightforward to reach by vehicle. Guided tours in multiple languages help visitors understand the artworks and the site's story.

The frescoes kept their colors even though the monastery stood roofless for roughly two centuries and faced the elements. This resilience of the artworks against weather surprises many visitors.
