Novi Pazar Fortress

Novi Pazar Fortress is a triangular structure with three corner bastions and a central observation tower positioned between the northern and western sections. The complex sits in the town center, bordered by the Raska River and Old Market Square.

The fortress was originally built in the 15th century and underwent major reconstruction after 1683. Wooden walls were replaced with stone fortifications following a significant military change in the region.

The carved stone walls feature lions, bows, arrows, birds, and snakes as local artistic expressions. These symbols reflect how people of that era viewed protection and their creative traditions.

The site is centrally located and accessible from multiple entry points throughout the town. Plan time to explore the different sections and climb the observation towers for better views.

The octagonal watchtower called Stara izvidnica features four distinct levels with specialized openings for observation. This design shows how carefully the defensive systems were planned in that period.
