Đurđevi stupovi

Đurđevi Stupovi is a Serbian Orthodox monastery near Novi Pazar featuring two bell towers and Byzantine architectural elements throughout its structure. The complex is situated on elevated terrain and combines different building styles in its overall layout.

Grand Prince Stefan Nemanja founded this religious complex in 1170 following his release from imprisonment. The monastery was dedicated to Saint George and became one of the earliest monastic foundations in medieval Serbia.

The monastery displays the Raška style through its stonework and medieval frescoes spanning different periods, still visible to visitors today. The painted walls tell of devotion to Saint George, a spiritual focus that has endured here for centuries.

The grounds are accessible on most days and offer views across the surrounding hillside. It is wise to wear sturdy shoes as the path to the monastery involves uneven terrain.

The complex blends Roman and Byzantine construction techniques in ways rarely seen in medieval Balkan buildings. This mixing of styles is particularly visible in the lateral vestibules and the multi-chambered altar area.
