Church of Saint Apostles Peter and Paul

The Church of Saint Apostles Peter and Paul is an Orthodox church perched on a hill with a circular floor plan and three radiating apses. The building is covered with multi-layered frescoes and displays the architectural features characteristic of Byzantine construction.

The church was established in the 4th century during Roman rule and underwent major renewal in the 9th century. It later served as a seat for Serbian rulers, marking a site of continuous religious importance.

The frescoes inside reveal different artistic styles across centuries, showing visitors how religious imagery evolved in medieval times. Walking through the interior, one can observe these painted walls and understand the shifting approaches to devotional art.

The site is accessible via a marked trail that climbs the hill and is straightforward for visitors to navigate. Guided tours are offered on-site to help understand the architectural elements and their significance.

Archaeological work beneath the church floor revealed ancient Greek sculptures and a princely grave from the 5th century BC, uncovering a much older layer of history. These discoveries show that the hilltop held importance long before the building was constructed.
