Krasnokamensk is a town in eastern Zabaykalsky Krai near the Chinese border at 640 meters (2,100 feet) elevation. The settlement covers 73 square kilometers (28 square miles) and serves as administrative center of the municipal formation.
The town started in 1967 as a workers' settlement for uranium mining in the remote eastern region. Official status as a town followed two years later in 1969.
The name comes from the reddish rock formations visible across the surrounding steppe, marking the site from a distance. Mining industry shapes the layout of neighborhoods and the appearance of streets today.
Access is through the local airport with connections to the wider transport network. Elevation and continental climate call for warm clothing during most of the year.
The Priargunsky mining enterprise runs the country's largest uranium extraction site with integrated processing halls. The facility also operates its own power plant to supply energy for the entire industrial infrastructure.
