Kstovo, Industrial city in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Russia.
Kstovo sits on the right bank of the Volga and covers an area with residential districts and industrial zones. Several neighborhoods spread east and west along the river, divided by production facilities and green strips between the settlements.
The settlement began in the 14th century as a village and grew into an industrial center after the Novogorkovsky oil refinery construction started in 1958. The facility attracted workers and transformed the place into a modern center with factories and housing blocks.
The World Academy of Sambo opened in 1964 and trains athletes and instructors in this Russian martial art. Competitions and courses take place here regularly, drawing participants from different regions.
The M7 motorway from Moscow to Kazan runs through the area and makes it possible to arrive by car or coach. Electric trains and regional buses connect the city with Nizhny Novgorod and other nearby places.
The place name Kstovo comes from the Mordvin language and means strawberry. This linguistic origin recalls the original population of the area before industrial development.
