Rybinsk, Industrial city in Yaroslavl Oblast, Russia
Rybinsk is an industrial city at the junction of the Volga and Sheksna rivers in Yaroslavl Oblast, Russia. The center extends along the left bank of the Volga with wide streets and Soviet-era buildings alongside older structures from the 19th century.
The settlement emerged in 1071 as Ust-Sheksna and developed into an important trading point for fish deliveries. In the 18th century it became a major inland port center facilitating goods transport between Saint Petersburg and southern regions.
The city carried the name Andropov between 1984 and 1989 before returning to its traditional name. Local markets along the waterfront still sell fish from the Volga today, a tradition dating back to medieval times.
Visitors can walk along the waterfront promenade and enjoy views of the river and port, especially pleasant during summer. Most central sights lie within walking distance from the main square.
A memorial stone by the shore marks the spot where old Mologa stood before it went underwater. On clear days with low water levels, church spires from the submerged settlement sometimes emerge from the reservoir.
