Yugskaya Dorofeeva Pustyn is an Orthodox monastery in the Rybinsky District, built where the Yug River meets the Volga. The complex includes several churches and auxiliary buildings set within a remote forested area along the riverbank.
A monk from a nearby monastery founded this hermitage in the early 1600s, drawn to the confluence of the two rivers as a place of solitude. Over the following centuries the community grew and the site became a recognized religious center in the Volga region.
The monastery served as a pilgrimage destination where visitors came to venerate a sacred icon housed within its walls. The site drew faithful from across the region who sought spiritual comfort and blessing at this holy place.
The monastery sits far from major towns and can only be reached via unpaved tracks, so a sturdy vehicle is a good idea. There are few services nearby, so bringing supplies and allowing extra travel time is advisable.
The hermitage takes its name from its founder, a monk called Dorofei, whose name survives in the full title of the site even though he left almost no written record behind. A venerated icon that once drew pilgrims from distant places was later moved away and replaced with a copy, changing how the site was visited over time.
