The Volzhsky district stretches along the left bank of the Volga River near the Rybinsk Reservoir dam, covering an area of 8.5 square kilometers.
The district evolved from five villages and gained significance in 1935 when authorities decided to construct hydroelectric power stations in Uglich and Rybinsk.
