Semikarakorsk, Administrative center in Rostov Oblast, Russia
Semikarakorsk is a town in Rostov Oblast situated on the left bank of the Don River. The settlement spreads across flat terrain at an elevation of about 10 meters above sea level.
The settlement began in 1672 as a Cossack stanitsa and relocated several times because of Don River flooding. Its current location was permanently established in 1845.
The remnants of the Semikarakorsk Fortress, constructed with 2 million bricks during the Khazar period, stand as evidence of early medieval architecture.
The town operates on UTC+3 time zone with direct transport links to Rostov-on-Don, roughly 137 kilometers southwest. Visitors should expect continental climate and seasonal weather changes.
A medieval fortress near the town featured a square-within-square design with walls stretching nearly one kilometer in total length according to archaeological findings. This construction reveals the military planning of past epochs during the Khazar period.
