Shelekhov, Industrial town in Irkutsk Oblast, Russia.
Shelekhov is an industrial town in Irkutsk Oblast in Eastern Siberia, located roughly 20 kilometers southwest of Irkutsk on a plateau. The settlement grew around an aluminum smelter, and the factory remains a defining feature of the townscape along with residential blocks and public areas.
The town was founded in 1953 when workers built housing for Irkutsk's aluminum smelter and initially named it after the factory abbreviation. It was later renamed after a historical merchant to mark its connection to Russia's broader story of expansion.
The name comes from Grigory Shelekhov, an 18th-century merchant and explorer who expanded Russian reach in the Pacific. The town preserves this connection through local monuments and stories visible in museums and public spaces.
The town is relatively flat and easy to walk around, with developed streets and public squares. Sturdy shoes are recommended, especially during cold months when snow and ice affect the paths.
The town hosted international bandy championships, a traditional ice sport similar to hockey played on frozen lakes and wide fields. This fast and technical game draws fans from many countries and shows how Siberian regions connect to this winter sport.
