Tupolev, Aerospace manufacturer in Basmanny District, Moscow, Russia
Tupolev is an aircraft design bureau along the Yauza River in Moscow, developing military bombers and civilian passenger planes since its founding. The bureau sits in Basmanny District and remains one of the main facilities in the Russian aviation industry.
The Soviet government founded the bureau in 1922 as part of the Central Aerohydrodynamics Institute under the leadership of Andrei Tupolev. The facility focused on developing metal aircraft for civilian and military purposes from the start.
The company received four major state decorations, including the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Red Banner, for its contributions to Soviet aviation.
The headquarters at Academician Tupolev Embankment 17 employs thousands of engineers and specialists in aircraft design and production. Visitors can only enter the grounds after prior registration, as it is a protected industrial site.
The bureau developed the Tu-144, the first commercial supersonic jet to break the sound barrier in 1969. This aircraft flew several months before the Concorde and reached higher speeds than its Western counterpart.
