Zheleznogorsk, Industrial city in Kursk Oblast, Russia
Zheleznogorsk is an industrial settlement in Kursk Oblast, located roughly 140 kilometers northwest of the regional capital of the same name. The town stretches along a river valley, surrounded by flat forest areas and gentle ridges typical of the western Russian landscape.
The settlement arose during the second half of the 1950s to access the underground iron deposits in the area. Mining operations remained the main economic foundation for the growing population over the following decades.
Residents walk along the wide avenues and the central riverfront promenade, which becomes busy on summer weekends. Local markets offer regional produce and handmade goods from the surrounding area.
Most public buildings and shops are located in the central area, from which you can reach the residential districts on foot. In winter, temperatures can drop well below zero, so warm clothing is recommended for spending time outdoors.
The name of the town refers to iron ore, which has been mined here for over six decades. Some of the extraction sites lie several hundred meters beneath the surface, shaping the terrain in ways invisible above ground.
