Evenk Autonomous Okrug, Former autonomous district in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia
The Evenk Autonomous Okrug was an administrative district in Siberia's Krasnoyarsk Krai that covered 767,600 square kilometers of remote taiga and tundra. Tura served as its main settlement, though the entire territory had no established cities.
The okrug was established in 1930 as a National okrug within the Soviet Union, recognizing the rights of the Evenki people. It remained in existence until its dissolution on December 31, 2006.
The Evenki people lived across this territory as reindeer herders with their own language and customs. Their way of life shaped the character of the region for generations.
This territory no longer exists as an administrative division and can only be studied through historical records and maps. Information about the region and its history is available in local museums and archives in Krasnoyarsk.
The 2002 census recorded only about 17,700 people living across the entire territory, making it one of Russia's least populated regions. This sparse population meant that settlements were far apart and life was highly remote.
