Simeiz, Resort settlement in Yalta Municipality, Russia.
Located at the base of Mount Kosh-Kaya, Simeiz extends along the Black Sea coast at an elevation of 100 meters above sea level.
The settlement started as a Byzantine monastery, later becoming a Maltsov family estate in 1828, leading to the development of vineyards and the Simeiz Observatory.
Greek origins influenced the name Simeiz, meaning 'flag', while the area attracted diverse populations including Russians, Crimean Tatars, and Ukrainians throughout its history.
The settlement maintains several sanatoriums specializing in tuberculosis treatment, continuing its legacy as a medical destination established after the October Revolution.
The Simeiz Observatory, established in 1900, developed into a significant astronomical research facility despite experiencing severe damage during World War II.
