Bosporan Kingdom

The Bosporan Kingdom extended across eastern Crimea and the Taman Peninsula, encompassing territories around the present-day Kerch Strait between the Black Sea and Sea of Azov.

Founded in 437 BCE by Greek settlers from Heraclea Pontica, the kingdom maintained independence until the 370s when Hun invasions led to its final decline.

The kingdom developed a mixed society where Greek colonists and Scythian tribes shared traditions, creating distinct burial practices in large earthen mounds called kurgans.

Archaeological remains of the kingdom include ancient structures, artifacts, and burial sites across multiple locations in modern Russia, particularly near the city of Kerch.

The rulers of this kingdom presented themselves differently to various populations, acting as archons for Greek citizens while maintaining the title of king for local tribes.
