Gazprom Arena, Football stadium on Krestovsky Island, Saint Petersburg, Russia
Gazprom Arena is a football stadium on Krestovsky Island in Saint Petersburg, offering 68,134 seats distributed across several tiers and equipped with a retractable roof. The structure displays modern architectural solutions and provides facilities for players and visitors across its levels.
Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa won the design competition with his concept called The Spaceship, based on an enlarged version of Toyota Stadium. The new structure replaced the former Kirov Stadium and opened for use in 2017.
The arena takes its name from a Russian energy company and serves as home ground for FC Zenit Saint Petersburg during domestic league fixtures. Match days bring supporters together in surrounding streets, creating a lively buildup around the venue.
The complex connects through nearby metro stations to Saint Petersburg's public transport network and offers adapted facilities for visitors with limited mobility. When the roof closes, the interior remains protected and comfortable even in rough weather.
During winter 2018, the stadium set an attendance record when 71,381 people gathered for an ice hockey match between Russia and Finland. For this event, the playing surface was converted into a temporary ice rink.
