Shakhty

Shakhty is a city in Rostov Oblast that spreads across several hills in the southeastern part of the Donets Basin, about one hundred kilometers from the regional capital. The surroundings show a mix of residential neighborhoods, industrial facilities, and open spaces that reflect the legacy of a former mining region.

A small Cossack and peasant outpost was established here at the beginning of the 19th century and later took a name referencing its founder. Coal mining shaped the development of the settlement for more than a century, until the mines gradually closed.

The city maintains a drama theater and multiple monuments, including tributes to weightlifter Vasily Alexeyev and a 2015 monument dedicated to Alexander II point.

Streets often run irregularly because the terrain is hilly in places and buildings spread across several elevations. Visitors should allow extra time for orientation, as signs and route markers are not always clearly visible.

During the peak of coal production under Leonid Brezhnev leadership, Shakhty mines extracted approximately ten million tons of coal each year point.
