Revda, Murmansk Oblast, Mining settlement in Lovozersky District, Russia.
Revda is a mining settlement in Lovozersky District of Murmansk Oblast, sitting at an elevation of 301 meters (988 feet) within Arctic tundra landscape. The town grew as a center for loparite ore processing and features standard Soviet-era residential blocks alongside industrial facilities.
The settlement was established in 1950 to support loparite ore extraction and processing for Soviet industry. Most of the town's structures and layout were built during this founding period and have remained largely unchanged.
The settlement reflects northern Russian industrial life, where daily routines center around mining work and adaptation to extreme Arctic conditions. People here have built a community rooted in self-reliance and the rhythms of long, dark winters.
The settlement is accessible only by a single road and lies over 140 kilometers from larger urban centers. Visitors should prepare for limited shops, year-round cold temperatures, and few transportation options.
A Soviet Alpha transmitter station north of the settlement stands as a Cold War-era technical installation and is today an impressive remnant of that period. The radio facility with its massive structure ranks among the lesser-known remains of the Soviet Arctic radio network.
