Alexandra Land, Glaciated island in Franz Josef Land, Russia.
Alexandra Land is an island in Franz Josef Land covering roughly 1,050 square kilometers and dominated by extensive glacier coverage. The terrain ranges from low areas to hills, with the highest point reaching around 380 meters above sea level.
English explorer Benjamin Leigh Smith discovered this island in 1880 and named it after Princess Alexandra of Wales during his Arctic voyage. Russia later established military facilities to secure its presence in this remote part of the Arctic.
Russian military operations on this island demonstrate how human presence extends into one of Earth's most remote areas. The settlements reflect the nation's commitment to maintaining a foothold in the High Arctic.
Access to the island is extremely limited due to harsh Arctic conditions and its remote location. Visitors should be aware that extreme weather and sea ice make travel here difficult and require careful planning.
The island is home to the Arctic Trefoil base, a three-lobed structure designed specifically to house around 150 people in extreme polar conditions. This unusual architectural design allows the facility to function efficiently despite the harshest environment on Earth.
