Khan Krim Girey commissioned the fountain in the 18th century to commemorate his departed wife Maria, who met her end through poisoning.
Alexander Pushkin's 1824 poem about the fountain inspired multiple artistic works, including an opera, a ballet, and numerous paintings.
Visitors can observe the fountain's intricate details in the Ambassadors' courtyard of the palace complex during regular opening hours.
The fountain's marble flower symbolizes an eye releasing tears, while its connected bowls represent different stages of human suffering.
