Fountain of Tears in Bakhchisaray Palace, Marble fountain in Bakhchisaray Palace, Crimea.

The fountain consists of vertical marble bowls through which water flows from one level to the next in a continuous movement. It stands in the Ambassadors' courtyard of the palace complex and displays a steady water cascade across several basins.

Khan Krim Giray commissioned the fountain in the 18th century to commemorate his late wife Maria, who died by poisoning. He gave the commission to Persian masters who shaped the work according to eastern building traditions.

Alexander Pushkin wrote a poem about this place in 1824 that later became the basis for an opera, a ballet, and many paintings. His lyrical interpretation shaped how the place was seen in Russian literature and art for generations to come.

The courtyard with the fountain is accessible during the palace's regular opening hours and is located in the rear section of the complex. Those who want to see the fine details of the marble reliefs should come in daylight and plan some time for observation.

The marble flower at the top of the fountain represents an eye shedding tears, while the connected bowls symbolize different phases of human grief. Each detail carries its own symbolic meaning that becomes clear only upon close observation.
