Afrikanda, Rural settlement in Polyarnye Zori district, Russia.
Afrikanda is a settlement on the Kola Peninsula in the Arctic, situated beyond the Arctic Circle at about 138 meters elevation. It has a railway station on the Kirov Railway line that connects it to neighboring cities of Polyarnye Zori and Apatity.
The settlement was established in 1925 as an urban locality along the expanding railway line. Its status was reclassified to rural in 2005, reflecting the area's changing development patterns.
The name comes from railway workers who compared local temperatures to African warmth during construction. This playful naming reflects how builders perceived the area's relatively warmer heat source.
Train travel remains the main way to reach this location, especially in winter when roads become difficult to navigate. Pack warm clothing as temperatures stay low year-round in this Arctic location beyond the Arctic Circle.
This place was once a major railway hub with far more residents, but declined like many Arctic settlements. The railway station still stands as a reminder of that past importance and remains the heart of the community today.
