Moskovskaya, Metro station in Saint Petersburg, Russia
Moskovskaya is a deep underground metro station on the Moskovsko-Petrogradskaya Line in Saint Petersburg, built with an island platform between two parallel tracks. It sits in the southern part of the city, in the Moskovskiy district, and serves as a major interchange point for travelers heading to or from the airport.
The station opened on December 25, 1969, as part of the southward expansion of the city's metro network. At the time, the surrounding area was still being developed, and the station was built to serve the growing residential neighborhoods in the south of the city.
The station takes its name from Moskovsky Prospekt, the long avenue that runs above it and connects the city center to the southern districts. Stepping outside, visitors find themselves on a busy street lined with Soviet-era buildings and everyday shops.
Shuttle buses to Pulkovo Airport depart from just outside the station, making it a straightforward starting point for airport journeys. If traveling with luggage, it helps to use the elevator rather than the escalator when entering or leaving the station.
Moskovskaya was among the first metro stations in the world to install platform screen doors, a safety feature that was not yet common in other networks at the time. These doors, which separate passengers from the tracks, were later adopted by many metro systems around the world.
