Rumyantsev mansion

The Rumyantsev mansion is a museum building on English Embankment in Saint Petersburg that houses multiple exhibition halls with art collections, furniture, and historical artifacts across three floors. The rooms connect to form a pathway through different periods of the city's history.

The building was constructed in 1730 and initially belonged to Prince Golitsyn before Count Nikolai Rumyantsev acquired it in 1802 and transformed it into a grand residence. Following the Soviet takeover, the property became a museum and has served that purpose ever since.

The mansion presents rotating exhibitions that document different periods of St. Petersburg life through paintings, photographs, and personal objects. Visitors experience how the city and its residents lived across changing times.

The mansion is located on English Embankment and welcomes visitors Tuesday through Sunday; comfortable shoes are recommended since exploring the three floors involves walking through many rooms. Guided tours in multiple languages are available for those who want more context about the exhibitions.

The interior retains original decorations from the 1820s, including ornate ceiling plasterwork, marble fireplaces, and intricate parquet patterns on the floors. This design reveals the luxury and refinement that the nobility and wealthy merchants who lived here enjoyed.
