Nicholas Palace, Imperial palace in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
Nicholas Palace is a mansion in Saint Petersburg featuring a monumental gray marble staircase that curves upward on both sides and is supported by Corinthian columns. The interior has high ceilings throughout and displays classical architectural elements that exemplify imperial-era craftsmanship.
Built between 1861 and 1873 for Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaievich, the palace originally served as a private residence for an imperial family member. After being converted in 1894, it was repurposed as an educational institution for women from the aristocracy.
The palace theater presents Russian folk performances with traditional music and dance that visitors experience inside a former aristocratic residence. These shows reflect artistic traditions that were cultivated during imperial times and remain alive through contemporary presentations.
The building stands near Admiralteyskaya metro station and should be reserved in advance to ensure entry is possible. Evening performances run regularly, so it helps to check the current schedule before planning your visit.
The building was partially constructed using leftover materials from the Saint Isaac's Cathedral construction site, including surplus bricks and stones. These materials were incorporated into the vestibule decoration, creating a direct link to another landmark in the city.
