Anglican church in Saint Petersburg

The Anglican church on English Embankment is a classicist building with a symmetrical facade and wings on either side. The interior houses a 19th-century pipe organ that is still played for concerts.

The building was constructed in 1730 for British merchants and diplomats and received its classical form between 1814 and 1815. This redesign made it one of the most important gathering places for the foreign community.

The building served as a gathering place for the British community in the city, and you can still sense how the space was designed for meetings and celebrations. The interior reflects the tastes that wealthy foreigners brought with them to this place.

Of the four organs that British expatriates had installed there in the 19th century, only one has survived. This fact reveals how fragile the history of that expatriate community turned out to be.
