154th Preobrazhensky Independent Commandant's Regiment, Russian Armed Forces honor guard
The 154th Preobrazhensky Independent Commandant's Regiment is an honor guard unit of the Russian Armed Forces based in Moscow. It is made up of several battalions and companies whose soldiers take part in parades, changing-of-the-guard ceremonies, and state celebrations across the country.
The regiment was formed in 1979 by merging two older security units. In 2013, a presidential decree gave it its current name to honor the legendary guard that Peter the Great built in the late 17th century.
The regiment takes its name from a guard unit founded by Peter the Great in the 17th century, giving its modern ceremonial duties a deep historical resonance. Visitors attending state events can see the soldiers up close in their green-faced uniforms with gold buttons and tall bearskin hats.
The unit is easiest to see during major public events, especially the Victory Day parade on May 9 at Red Square. Regular changing-of-the-guard ceremonies at the Kremlin also offer a chance to watch the soldiers in full ceremonial dress.
The regiment has performed in over 35 countries, from China and Vietnam to France and Mexico. These tours abroad show how ceremonial duties can become a form of diplomatic representation that goes well beyond the parade ground.
