Pluton, Deep space communication complex in Yevpatoria, Crimea.
Pluton is a deep space communication complex in Yevpatoria comprising multiple antennas spread across two locations for sending and receiving signals from spacecraft. The system operates with receiving stations in the north and transmission equipment positioned several kilometers away to the south, working together as an integrated tracking and command facility.
The facility began operating in 1960 as the primary communication system for Soviet space missions, playing a central role in tracking and controlling spacecraft throughout the decade. Its importance to the space program diminished after the late 1970s with the development of more advanced telescopes.
In 1962, the facility transmitted messages with words MIR, LENIN, and SSSR toward the star HD131336 in the Libra constellation.
The facility is split between two separate stations located miles apart, so visiting both requires travel between locations. Plan for varying lighting conditions and bring appropriate gear depending on when you visit each station.
The antenna construction repurposed diesel submarine hulls mounted on railway bridge trusses to create steerable frames for the radio dishes.
