Bashkir State Art Museum, State art museum in Ufa, Russia
The Bashkir State Art Museum is an art museum in Ufa, Russia, housed in a mansion dating to 1913. It holds a collection of Russian paintings, mainly from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, alongside older works from earlier periods.
The museum opened in 1920, shortly after the Red Army took Ufa during the Russian Civil War. The first collection was put together from private holdings that had been seized after the revolution.
The building on Gogol Street is a mansion from the early 20th century and is itself a good example of the architecture of that era. Inside, visitors can see portraits, landscapes, and religious works that show how Russian painters of the time approached their subjects.
The museum sits on Gogol Street in central Ufa and can be reached on foot from most central points in the city. It also has a library with books on art history, open to visitors who want to look deeper into the collection.
Among the holdings are two religious icons from the late 16th century, attributed to an unknown artist and part of a Deesis rank. These works are several centuries older than most of the collection and come from a very different tradition of Russian art.
