Kosterin House, Ufa

Kosterin House is a three-story stone mansion on Karl Marx Street designed in Russian Art Nouveau style with elaborate moldings, bas-reliefs, and a symmetrical U-shaped floor plan featuring two separate entrances. The building retains original features including oak doors and decorated stucco ceilings that show the refined architectural approach of its era.

Pavel Kosterin, a merchant, built this residence in 1907 after purchasing two adjoining properties at the intersection of Pushkinskaya and Aleksandrovskaya streets. The construction reflected contemporary ambitions to create a modern dwelling that would impress through both design and innovative comfort features.

The mansion reflects how prosperous merchants displayed their wealth and standing in pre-revolutionary society through carefully designed spaces and refined decoration. The layout and ornamental details show the care taken to demonstrate social status and appreciation for quality craftsmanship.

The building currently operates as a working federal customs office, so interior access is limited, but you can view its exterior and architectural details from the street. Walking around the structure allows you to appreciate the symmetrical facade and ornamental stonework from different angles.

This residence was among the first private homes in Ufa to feature central heating, powered by an innovative boiler system installed in the basement. This modern comfort feature was groundbreaking for residential buildings in the region at that time.
